Waking up to a new day…

Jan
09

As 2009 is upon us I am always encouraged by people to “make resolutions!” Well as much as I don’t want to “make resolutions” just because it is 2009 I feel compelled to. Just thought I’d share a few new ones.

I want to serve my wife more. She works so hard and loves me so well that I want to pour into her what she pours into me.

Make more defined times to study the word, not just do a devotional.

Wake up every morning to watch the sun rise…Even if it is cloudy. (This is going to be the hardest of them all.)

Fast more than I have in the past.

blah blah blah the list goes on. I think the ones I really want to try that are different are the waking up early for study and watching the sun rise. There is something so beautiful about the sun rising. I don’t know if it is because a new day is upon us, or because it is a day of second, third infitiny chances to love God in a deeper way. Who knows, but what I do know is that God is in the sunrise. He is in the warmth of the rays that shine upon us. I love that He uses creation to bring glory to Himself.

To a new day.

Always on my mind…

Jan
08

No, I am not talking about Willie Nelson. I am talking about questions. I always have questions on my mind. I am always playing out situations and asking, “What now or What else could I do.” Most of these questions have to do with life, God, and the truth.

Recently I have had this incredible fascination to study the Torah (Five books of Moses- Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.) I want to study it however from the Jewish perspective. I have been completely intrigued by how they view life, God and the truth. I love putting the bible back into it’s context regarding culture, ways of life, traditions etc. A couple days ago I purchased a Chumash (Torah) Stone Edition, which is a commentary from ancient rabbis on the five books of Moses. As I was reading the inside of the book I found this statement regarding how to read it,  ”Ask lot’s of questions.”

I find it odd and funny that the very thing that was always accepted as common sense to the Jewish mind, asking questions, is something we rarely do in the American Church. We take what the pastor of a church says and scarf it down like one big buffet table. We cram in the junk with the good and the gross with the tasty never thinking to ask questions.

Why do we pray with our eyes closed? Why bow our heads? Why did Jesus heal the lepers the way he did and then tell them not to say anything except to the priests first? Why do we act as though a one time prayer is a free pass to heaven regardless of our actions after the prayer? There are millions of questions that I have asked over the years some of them relevant and some of them just out of curiosity.

I begin my study through Genesis tomorrow, so I’m sure you will be hearing from me a lot more. :-) I hope to have input from you guys and gals as well because I think that it is a great way to learn more about God and each other. I’m more than open to any ideas about the verses/chapters I may discuss, so feel free to share.
